Upgrade and Subscription

Whether an upgrade to a new webPDF version is possible without a separate offer depends on the status of your subscription.

With an active subscription

With an active Subscription you have access to new program versions within the scope of the subscription terms. In this case, a separate update offer is generally not required for upgrading to a newer major version.

Without an active subscription

If no active subscription exists, a separate offer is generally required for upgrading to a newer major version. This applies in particular when a new license key for the target version also needs to be provided.

What is the difference between update and upgrade?

In common usage, both terms are often used interchangeably. For practical assessment, the key question is:

  • Should only the current maintenance state within your existing entitlement be used?
  • Or is a switch to a new major version intended?

For switching to a new major version, both the license entitlement and the matching license key need to be verified.

For carrying out a maintenance update — for example, installing a service update from 10.0.3 to 10.0.4 — no review of the license entitlement or issuance of a new license key is necessary.

What information speeds up the clarification?

Particularly helpful are:

  • the currently used webPDF version
  • the desired target version
  • the subscription status
  • the company name of the licensee
  • existing license documents (e.g. current license certificates)

When should an offer be requested?

An offer makes sense when:

  • no active subscription exists
  • it is unclear whether your existing entitlement already includes the target version
  • additional server licenses or instances are required
